New to FloorWerk? What to Expect as a Beginner
Welcome, and hello!
I’m Jasmine, your dance teacher and creator of Minx Choreography. My classes are a space for women to reconnect with their femininity, feel confident in their bodies, and enjoy learning something new… without any pressure of needing to “get it perfect.”
Whether you’re brand new to dance or just new to FloorWerk, this post is here to ease any nerves and help you feel prepped before your first class.
Below is more detail on what to expect in my Beginner FloorWerk classes, what to wear, and answers to some of the most common questions I get from first-time dancers.
Feeling Nervous? Totally Normal!
I’ve had so many students say they were nervous to try their first class, and after quickly falling in love with dance… only wish they started sooner!
I know it can feel really intimidating walking into a new studio, especially if you’re unsure about coming solo, but this is a judgement-free zone where you don’t need ANY previous dance experience. Beginner FloorWerk is your space to explore something new!
My classes are designed for having FUN. There is no expectation to get timing perfect, or to remember the choreo precisely… the goal is to feel sexy, have a laugh, and enjoy moving your body in a room full of women embracing their confidence.
What a Typical Beginner FloorWerk Class Looks Like
ARRIVE
Doors are open 15 mins before class starts and I’m usually setting up, so feel free to come in, get settled, and say hi! I love meeting new students and learning a bit about you. Classes will run for 1.5 hours.
WARM-UP
We warm up entirely on the floor, so pop your kneepads and heels on when you arrive. It’s a short, guided warm-up just to get mobile, and we take a moment to say a quick hello to the students next to you (so now you know someone's name if you came solo!)
FOUNDATIONAL MOVES
We’ll break down 2-3 floor-based moves at the start of class that you’ll see in the choreo. These change each week and are common moves used in sensual style dance, so you’ve got a chance to feel them out before we dive into the routine.
Note: We only do this in Beginner FloorWerk, so if you join for my secondary, mixed-level class, we'll skip straight to the choreo!
LEARN THE CHOREO
I’ll teach you a 30-second routine (my mixed level class = 1-min) that's entirely on the floor — so no standing or walking! Movements are cued to lyrics, broken down step-by-step and repeated in small sections with music so you can get comfy with timing before we add more on. I dance with you and call cues out to help you remember it all. We also split into groups throughout class so you have the chance to watch from the front and give the other girlies some hyping and encouragement!
FULL RUN-THROUGHS
Once we’ve built the full routine, we run it together to music a few times. You’re always encouraged to change up any moves how you like, or ask for modifications if something’s not feeling sexy for you.
FILMING (OPTIONAL)
We’ll split into smaller groups to film each other at the end. It's totally optional if you'd like to film yourself, but it’s a fun way to track progress! There's always space for you to dance off-camera too if you prefer.
WRAP UP
We finish up with a cute little group selfie to celebrate! You’re welcome to stay back for a chat or ask any questions before you head off.

What To Wear & Bring To Class
Here’s a quick checklist of what you’ll need for classes:
- An outfit you feel hot in - eg. activewear, bodysuit, fishnet stockings etc.
- Kneepads - required for FloorWerk
- Heels - optional (socks can be worn as an alternative)
- Water Bottle
FAQ: Common Questions From First-Time Dancers
> Can I come alone?
Absolutely. A lot of students do, and it’s a super welcoming vibe!
> How big are the classes?
Classes are capped around 10 people so you have plenty of space and opportunity to ask questions and workshop moves.
> Do I have to wear heels?
Heels are optional, and many beginners start off wearing socks (which help your feet slide). If you’d like to try heels, you can begin with a simple ankle boot. Try to avoid strappy shoes as these won’t feel secure.
> Will I be filmed?
Sometimes I film for social media but will always let you know in advance so you can opt in or out. When we do our filming rounds, we can also make sure you are not in anyone else’s videos. If you have particular concerns about privacy, just let me know before class.
> What days and times are the classes?
I run weekly casual classes in two different Brisbane locations — Kedron & Moorooka. Each class is a new routine so you can dance on your own schedule. You can check the current timetable here.
